And the Tour Begins - Trier
Day 1 - Meeting the Group
We had our group orientation at the hotel. After meeting everyone, learning a bit about the tour, and picking our buddies, our tour guide, Daniela, took us on a short orientation walk on the way to Zum Domstein for our first group dinner.
Every day, Daniela would post the iteneray for the next day. It is a good idea to take a picture of it to have with you. Plus, it really helps to remember what you did each day! |
The wine glasses stand back up so that you can refill them. There is even a poem on the side of the glasses.
Trink mich aus und leg mich nieder, steh ich auf, so füll mich wieder |
Day 2 - Trier and The Mosel
After breakfast, our day began with a walking tour of Trier with a local guide, Paula. The local guides on a Rick Steves' Tour are always so amazing. They really know their stuff and provide you with great insight into the history of a city or town.
After the tour, we met our bus driver, John, and headed out of town on our brand new bus. We stopped for lunch in Beilstein for a group lunch and some time to explore the town. Katie and I hiked up to the ruins of the castle before enjoying some gelato. The group then headed to Burg Eltz for a tour before heading back to Trier for a free evening. |
Trier Walking Tour
One of the more important pieces of wisdom passed on from Paula:
DO NOT STEP ON SAINT PETER! The manhole covers grace the likeness of St Peter. It is said that if you step on him, he will get his revenge by causing it to rain. If you do accidentally step on him, be sure to give him a kiss before moving on! |
Beilstein
Burg Eltz
Burg Eltz was begun in 1157. Today, the castle looks much like it did almost 700 years ago thanks to the Eltz family that has owned and cared for the castle for the past 850 years. It is more like three large houses put together onto a courtyard to make the castle. Our group was given a wonderful tour by Daniel, even though he didn't let us play with any of the weapons. Since the house is still owned by the Eltz family, no photos are allowed inside. I guess you will just have to visit for yourself!

Dinner in Trier
After our visit to Burg Eltz, we returned to Trier where we had the evening free. Katie and I went to dinner at Theo, where we had a wonderful dinner. The best part was the Spargel Creme soup!
